Volume Calculator

Calculate the volume of boxes, tanks and spaces using simple measurements.

The result uses the same unit of measurement you entered, cubed (e.g., if you typed values in meters, the result is in m³).

The volume calculator quickly finds the volume of four common shapes: cube, box, cylinder and sphere. It's useful for sizing moving boxes, water tanks, drums, or any regularly shaped space. Pick the shape, fill in the measurements, and see the volume calculated automatically.

How to use

  1. Choose the shape: cube, box, cylinder or sphere.
  2. Fill in the measurements requested for that shape, all in the same unit.
  3. Watch the volume update automatically as you type.

Worked example

Suppose you need to know how many liters fit in a cylindrical tank 0.5 m in radius and 1.2 m tall. In Cylinder mode, the calculator applies π × 0.5² × 1.2 and gets about 0.94 m³. Since 1 m³ equals 1,000 liters, the tank holds roughly 942 liters of water.

Frequently asked questions

What formulas are used for each shape?

Cube: side³. Box: length × width × height. Cylinder: π × radius² × height. Sphere: (4/3) × π × radius³.

How do I calculate the volume of a moving box or a tank?

Rectangular boxes and box-shaped tanks use length × width × height. Cylindrical tanks, like drums and round cisterns, use the cylinder formula.

Is the result in liters different from the result in cubic meters?

No, only the unit changes: 1 cubic meter (m³) equals 1,000 liters. The calculator shows the result in the cubic unit matching what you entered; to convert to liters, use the site's Unit Converter.

How do I convert volume in cubic meters to liters?

Multiply the volume in m³ by 1,000. For example, 2.5 m³ equals 2,500 liters. To go the other way, divide liters by 1,000. If you prefer, the site's Unit Converter does this conversion automatically.

What's the difference between volume and capacity?

They're closely related: volume is the space an object occupies, while capacity is how much a container can hold. In practice, for boxes and tanks, the internal volume equals the capacity — which is why this calculator works for both cases.

How do I calculate the volume of a pool?

For rectangular pools, use Box mode with length, width and average depth. For round pools, use Cylinder mode with the radius and depth. Multiplying the result in m³ by 1,000 tells you how many liters of water it holds.
